Vertical gardening is creating a tiny little footprint and going straight up, allowing people with the tiniest of places like small patios to have fantastic looking gardens in the summer.

For vertical gardening, you'll need cedar fence boards, coconut liner, stucco mesh or hardware mesh, deck screws, and ice cube trays.

Deck screws are recommended because they do not rust, which is essential for outdoor garden structures.

The holes in the ice cube trays allow water to slowly trickle into the garden, which helps keep the soil moist.

You start by filling it with soil only up to the first row of holes, then plant your plants, and continue layer by layer until you reach the top.

Plants should be placed at an angle to ensure that the soil doesn't fall out and that they are packed in nicely.

To maintain even watering, you can use a self-drip system created by placing ice cube trays filled with water at the top of the structure, which will slowly seep water down through the garden.
