Mycorrhizal fungi are a type of fungus that forms a symbiotic association with the roots of plants. This fungus creates hair-like strands in the soil that connect to plant roots, allowing an exchange of nutrients and water. This network helps the plants better resist drought and heat shock by providing them with water and essential nutrients.

Michael Fulton introduced organic matter such as manure and wood chips to the soil, and in an experimental effort, he also pureed store-bought edible mushrooms and spread them across his yard. Over time, this promoted the growth of mycorrhizal fungi, which helps the plants in his yard to thrive.

The purpose of the pond in Michael Fulton's garden is to provide a natural fertilization system. Water is added to the pond multiple times a day, which then overflows through a special spillway directed towards the garden. The overflow carries excess nutrients from the fish, enriching the soil and supporting the mycorrhizal network and plant growth.

Caution is advised with chemical fertilizers because in excess, they can disrupt the symbiotic relationship between plants and the mycorrhizal fungi. If the plants receive too many nutrients from fertilizers, they may not seek out the fungal network, and the mycorrhizal association may break down, hindering plant growth and health.
