Learning English through Cooking and Gardening at the Skip Garden

The purpose of Speak Street is to bring people together from different parts of the world, especially refugees and asylum seekers, to learn English, do gardening, and cook together in order to create community and increase skills while taking care of the environment.

Speak Street offers English classes, gardening, and cooking activities. They also focus on fostering a greater sense of connection with oneself and the communities around them through learning about the environment and the wider world.

People cook a variety of dishes at Speak Street. They share cultural understandings of food and different recipes from their own countries. Some examples mentioned in the subtitles are vegetable knuckles salad, pasta sauce, and couscous.

Speak Street benefits the participants by providing a space for them to practice their English skills. But it goes beyond that, as they also learn about different cultures, share recipes, and create a sense of community. It's a two-way learning experience where participants teach and learn from each other.

Speak Street has been funded through the Near Neighbor Fund. This fund has enabled them to provide English lessons and create a sense of community for people who would not normally have access to such opportunities. It has made a significant difference for the participants.
