The core gardening method involves filling a raised bed with rotten straw to absorb and retain moisture during dry, hot summers.

Start by digging a trench down the center of the bed and filling it with rotten straw. Then backfill the rest of the bed with topsoil and mushroom compost.

The trench for rotten straw should be about 10 inches deep.

After filling the trench with rotten straw, you can backfill and cover the bed with compost.

Add a good inch of compost or more on top of the bed, and continue to add and layer compost throughout the year for optimal soil health.
